Codenames is a highly acclaimed party deduction game that combines logical thinking, creativity with words, and exciting team rivalry. It works perfectly for family gatherings and game nights with friends, offering fast-paced gameplay and outstanding replayability.

What is the game about?

Players split into two roughly equal teams, each selecting one Spymaster. The remaining players become field agents. In the center of the table, 25 cards with codenames are laid out in a 5 × 5 grid. Each card features a single word that can have multiple meanings and associations.

The Spymasters sit together on one side of the table and are the only players who can see the key card. This key indicates which codenames belong to which team, which are neutral, and which one hides the assassin. The teams’ goal is to identify all of their agents as quickly as possible while avoiding the assassin.

Gameplay

On their turn, a Spymaster gives one clue:

• it must consist of a single word,

• it is accompanied by a number indicating how many codenames are connected to that clue.

After receiving the clue, the team may freely discuss and jointly decide which cards to reveal. They must guess at least one codename. If they uncover one of their own agents, they may continue guessing until they use up their allowed attempts (the number given by the Spymaster plus one extra guess). Revealing an opponent’s agent or a neutral card immediately ends the turn. Revealing the assassin results in an instant loss.

The game ends when one team has uncovered all of its agents or when a team reveals the assassin.
